CATCH ON TO THE PADDLE BOARDING CRAZE

The graceful and calming stillness of the Caribbean Sea has been attracting visitors for decades. Many prefer it to the fierceness of big rolling surfer waves that crash without apology in other tropical regions. Parents especially, feel a greater sense of ease while on vacation, knowing that their little ones can waddle and play in the gentle surf without the constant worry. Another unexpected reason to choose the more peaceful alternative however, is because it provides the absolute perfect conditions for everyone to the try the latest and undoubtedly, the hottest water sports craze…Paddle boarding! The flat serenity of the Caribbean Sea offers the ideal setting for adventurers to grab their boards and paddles and head out for an experience that is both fun and relaxing, but has also proven itself to be one fantastic workout!

This seemingly simple activity appears to have started a frenzy all over the world. People of all ages, from the young to the young at heart, have been really getting into this phenomenal water sport – perfect for families to enjoy time together, as the ease of the ocean allows one to glide gently across its surface, while taking in the serenity of the crystal clear waters and the sea life directly below. It’s the perfect combination of activity, calming relaxation and sightseeing. Being able to stand up and see all the life and beauty that surrounds you- both land and sea definitely gives a more unique perspective.

Even if you have never had an interest in water sports before, this one will definitely change your mind, as it allows you to be on the water but not necessarily in the water. Never surfed before? No problem, the key to being successful at paddle boarding is simply good balance; the gentle lull of the sea enables you to center easily. Once you are in a standing position in the middle of the board, just start rowing by using the paddle to propel yourself through the water; it’s just that easy and the best part- no pressure, you are in charge of setting your own pace. If you do want to give yourself a competitive edge however, then it’s very easy to plan a race. Paddle boarding competitions are very popular, particularly in places like Hawaii where the sport is said to have originated. It provides a great workout for the core muscles and upper body, but you’ll be having so much fun in the process- it won’t even seem like a workout!

Sandals resorts- ever the innovator, have caught on to the craze. The first resort chain to add a fleet of stand-up boards, Pau Hana Paddleboards are now available at all of the group’s resorts, yet another addition to its Luxury Included offering. Pau Hana (pronounced ‘pow hana’) is a Hawaiian term that simply means time after work, signifying relaxation, socializing and enjoyment. It’s no secret that at Sandals and Beaches, it is always Pau Hana time. With trainers there to guide you, there shouldn’t be anything holding you back from getting out there and seeing for yourself, what the craze is all about.

We LOVED to try Paddleboarding at the watersports center last week at Royal Plantation. After one lesson we were off to the races each day. It\’s a great way to see the ocean and the resort from off-shore at your own pace. You have to try it. By the end of our week we were pros! I love it.
